March 2026

A Message from the Principal

Happy March Gilpin Eagles,

Welcome to March! The 4th quarter is coming up soon. 3rd quarter ends right before Spring Break and 4th quarter will kick off when we return from Spring Break. We will be holding Parent/Teacher Conferences on April 2 in person here at the school and virtually on April 3. Be on the lookout for more info regarding P/T Conferences in the next couple of weeks. We look forward to seeing you at Conferences.

Energy Drinks at School
Parents, we ask for your support in limiting your student's access to energy drinks, especially for middle school students. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children and adolescents avoid all sugary and caffeinted beverages. Check out this article from Johns Hopkins Medicine for more info on why energy drinks are harmful for kids. This article has some helpful information on how to address caffeine use in teens: How much caffeine is safe for your teen?

Our PowerSchool parent portal is now accepting Choice Enrollment applications for the upcoming 2026-27 school year.
Warm regards,
Sara Reich

Students of the Month

A blue and gold 'Student of the Month' award featuring an eagle and graduation cap.

Congratulations to our February Students of the Month!

The February focus for the Student of the Month was EMPATHY. These students have both gone above and beyond to show this trait here at Gilpin County Secondary School. Great job, Eagles!

In March, our focus will be GENEROSITY.

MS Student of the Month: Ellen Gustafson

Ellen is such an amazing friend who is kind to everyone. Her strong sense of empathy allows her to really see others who struggle and step in to help. Ellen is not one to seek the spotlight, but everyone around her is drawn to her calm, encouraging personality and her smile truly lights up the room. We are fortunate to have Ellen at Gilpin as a shining example of true empathy.

HS Student of the Month: Johnny Noles

Johnny demonstrates this month’s focus of empathy inside the classroom on a daily basis. Johnny is kind to everyone in the classroom. He is respectful to his teachers, hardworking, and a polite young man. Johnny’s classmates look to him as a trusted peer in the classroom and someone who is willing to help anyone who needs extra support. Johnny is sensitive to his peers' needs and explains classroom concepts with kindness and a maturity beyond that of a typical 9th grade student. Johnny’s helpful nature and compassion towards others' needs has led him to emerge as a leader in the classroom.

In early February, the 12th grade Math Applications class, taught by Dawn Blake, trained to be Junior Achievement High School Heroes. They learned and delivered economic and finance lessons to K-4th grade classes. It was a fun partnership and the elementary students enjoyed learning from the seniors.

1st Grade: Felix, Austin, and Caden
2nd Grade: Elise, Katie, and Gaby
3rd Grade: Molly, Lola, and Mason

Proyectos en Español en MS y HS

Beginning the second semester in 2026, Spanish students in Ms. Josy's class showcased their learning in Spanish. Spanish 1 worked on a project to talk about "The house of my dreams". Spanish 2 worked on a project about "A big natural disaster in the world". Spanish 3 did their project on "My favorite myth or legend". Middle School's project was about "My favorite snack".  The students worked hard to create and present slides with historic, geographical, and original information. Students explained their point of view and brought in artifacts. The presentation was in Spanish and they did a great job. Be proud of yourselves, Gilpin Eagles!

MathCounts Competition

On February 6, six students from Gilpin competed in the Regional MathCounts Competition. With half of our team being 6th graders (in a 6th-8th grade competition), Gilpin really held its own and had a great time doing it! Congratulations to these amazing Mathletes for keeping a great attitude and working hard among some fierce competition. Shout out to Ms. Fuller for providing this awesome opportunity for our students!

CSU Campus Tour

On February 18th, ten college-bound students took a campus tour of Colorado State University. The highlights of the tour included seeing the beautiful campus, Ramgo (bingo cards students could fill out as they saw parts of the campus), connecting with other students from our BOCES district (this includes Clear Creek and Platte Canyon) and eating like college students in the cafeteria!

Snowcoming Spirit Week

During the 2nd week of February we had a great Spirit Week followed by Snowcoming Game Night. Our cheerleaders planned a fun Pep Rally for Thursday afternoon honoring our winter sports athletes and coaches. The Pep Rally was followed by boys and girls basketball games. We wanted to encourage more fun at the pep rally, so we did a special thing for the Seniors and invited them to make a grand entrance into the gym at the beginning of the Pep Rally with silly string, noisemakers, and at the end they got to set off confetti cannons during the “Battle Cry” cheer.

Congratulations to our February Student Athletes of the Month

Student Athletes are an important part of our school community. They lead our school both on and off the field/court.

MS Student Athlete of the Month: Maliah Raynes - Basketball

Maliah consistently displays our team core values Supportive and Precise. As a 6th grader, she has taken on more of a vocal leadership role this year, especially on our B team. Not only does Maliah know how to play every position on our team, she also ensures that everyone else on the floor knows where they are supposed to be. Her communication and gap positioning on defense lets her teammates know that they can get up and pressure the ball, that she is right behind them in case they get beat off the dribble. A huge offensive focus for our team for our last few games has been challenging our shooting range and shooting outside the paint. Maliah has really taken this to heart and has done a great job of driving to engage defense, but still giving herself enough time to get her shot off. Not only did Maliah play almost the entire B team game, but by the end of our season, Maliah was making a significant impact on our A team as well.
A young man proudly holds a certificate for "February 2026 Athlete of the Month" with his name, Landon Church, visible.

HS Student Athlete of the Month: Landon Church - Basketball

In Landon's first year playing the game of basketball, his natural athletic ability has been a true joy to watch. He has finally begun to embrace playing the game rather than just relying on that athletic ability, and it has turned him into a true dominant force night in and night out. This past month, he has been stuffing stat sheets in all categories, averaging 5 points per game, 16 rebounds, 2 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1 block. With all impressive numbers, it has been his warrior mentality that has kept this team in the fight as they have continued to show up and play their hearts out despite some tough losses. Landon has also taken on more of a leadership role, holding players accountable for dress attire on travel days, homework in the classroom, and showing up in a timely manner. His growth should completely highlight the expectations of our student-athletes. All his hard work was on full display in our playoff game this week, in which Landon went for 28 rebounds (definitely a school record), 3 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks, and 7 points. He also hit his first three of the season, a game-tying three that sent the crowd crazy down the stretch. A kid who has no fear and grinds every day is one of the most unselfish star athletes I have seen. He has been a true pleasure to coach based on his character!
