Hello Gilpin Eagles,
Happy Summer! On behalf of teachers, staff, and myself, I want to thank you parents and students for a wonderful school year!
Report Cards
Parents/guardians should have received the semester two report card electronically for their student(s). If you have difficulty accessing your student's report card, please reach out to sreich@gilpin.k12.co.us or kcobb@gilpin.k12.co.us with any questions.
Summer Safety
As the parent of a high school and an elementary student, I want to encourage parents and guardians to stay vigilant with the children in their care over the summer. I recently started following a School Resource Officer (SRO) on Facebook named SRO Gomez. He provides many practical tips for parents regarding online safety. I have learned a lot from reading his posts and I encourage you to check it out! Find SRO Gomez's Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/deputygomez
I hope you and your family have a fun and safe summer filled with great memories and adventures!

Below are a few words from Carly Johnson, a 2018 Gilpin Grad who produced an investigative series for KMBC Channel 9 in Kansas City that was awarded the Peabody Prize for investigative journalism. The Peabody Prize is as high an honor as you can receive for journalism.
"I graduated from Gilpin High School in 2018. I attended Gilpin County school all the way from preschool through 12th grade. I had many teachers that helped get me to where I am today. Mrs. VanHoose, Ms. Gillette, Ms. Newman, but the teacher that had the biggest impact on me was Mr. Shoe. He helped me get through a lot. He always pushed me to do my best, whether it was in the classroom, on the basketball court or in life. He taught me how to overcome adversity, and I truly wouldn't have accomplished all I have without him. Recently, a few of my co-workers and I won a Peabody Award, for our investigative documentary on the use of restraint devices in jails and prisons across the country. The award honors excellence in storytelling, shining a light on social issues in our society. This recognition feels especially meaningful because it reflects the kind of journalism I’ve always hoped to be a part of. It just goes to show that anything is possible, no matter how small of a town you came from! I owe a lot of my success to Gilpin school and the supportive community it is, and I am proud to be a Gilpin alum."

The Secondary Music Concert on May 7 was a beautiful evening with amazing choir and band performances. Great job students and Ms. Ebers! |
This year our HS Choir brought home a "GOOD" trophy and our HS Band brought home an "EXCELLENT" trophy. Way to go, singers and musicians!

The 2nd Annual Gilpin Shark Tank took place on May 11. 12th grade students taking Math Applications created business plans and pitched their ideas to our panelists. Eight different projects were presented including women's protective athletic wear, a historical train ride, an automotive website, and many food based businesses. Thank you to Mayor Jeremy Fey and long-time Gilpinites Eric and Mary Klemp for listening and providing beneficial feedback to our students. Congratulations to Elise Vincent, Molly Brennan, and Katie Brennan on being this year's Shark Tank Champions! Their business pitch was for women's protective athletic wear. |
7th Graders created various games for other students to play in their Probability Carnival. They had a great turnout with elementary and middle school students coming to check out the games and win some fun prizes. |
The Senior/Staff Challenge this year was Laser Tag. We played 4 rounds and the seniors beat the staff every round! Way to go, Class of 2026!

Graduation was a beautiful day filled with incredible speeches by the Class of 2026 Valedictorian Ally Webb, Salutatorian Adele Fisher, Class Speaker Ms. VanHoose, and our wonderful Counselor Ms. Cobb. Unfortunately, right before the Flower Ceremony, the lightning was getting too close and we had to move the ceremony inside. Thank you to everyone for making the transition indoors a smooth one. Congratulations to all of our graduates! We are so proud of you!!! Photo credit: Catrina Amaya

Students had a blast at Field Day. They did archery practice followed by Capture the Flag with bows and arrows. What a cool experience! We also had inflatables and tug of war. It was a fun day for all involved. Thank you to Coach Parten for organizing the day's events. |
We had a great time celebrating our students' academic achievements and growth as well as helping our 8th graders say farewell to middle school as they prepare to continue on into high school next year.

Ashley Johnson created this incredible detailed diorama of a medieval village with wooden structures for a project in Mr. Rouse's History class. Mr. Rouse said he has never seen such a well-crafted and detailed project. Great job, Ashley! |
Students in Ms. Newman's AP Biology class went to the Denver Zoo to deepen their learning.

Hello!
My name is Reid Hunsaker and I will be joining Gilpin County Schools this upcoming school year as a 6th and 7th grade social studies teacher. I will also be teaching a media production class at Gilpin this fall.
It is difficult to believe this will be my 5th year of teaching! I am thrilled to return to middle school after a couple of years working with 9th graders. I have spent the past 4 years at Council Bluffs Community School District in Iowa. In May of 2024, I earned my Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Doane University with an emphasis on digital literacy and source evaluation.
My wife and I are beginning our move to Colorado! We will be bringing our cat, Arnold, and our corgi, Lila, with us as well. My sister and her family live in nearby Lakewood and it'll be a wonderful chance to see my nephew grow up. We can't wait to be surrounded by such breathtaking nature and traversing the majestic Rockies! When we're not exploring the outdoors, my wife and I love to experience live theater, music, and comedy.
Some fun facts about me is my dual citizenship with Canada. I am an avid sports fan, my two favorite teams are the Nebraska Huskers and the Calgary Flames. I love to spend (way too much) time at museums and study the history of new places.
I have been so impressed at the warm welcome I have received from Gilpin County Schools, I am very excited to join the Eagle family!

My name is Nick Rucci and I’m excited to join the team at Gilpin County Schools! I grew up near the Finger Lakes region of New York in a small farm town that had great access to outdoor adventures and a vibrant artistic community. Eventually I moved to Vermont to combine these interests and pursue an education in the Visual Arts, Environmental Sciences, and Teaching.
Since moving to Colorado almost 10 years ago, I’ve been trying to explore everything it has to offer! When I’m not teaching, I work as a guide taking kids on outdoor adventures. And in my free time I love to snowboard, rock climb, mountain bike, and white water kayak.
When I am teaching, I love how students use their artwork to express themselves and build confidence in their making over time. The art room is such a great place to overcome challenges, problem solve, and explore new ideas. I’m excited to see what students bring to the table!
I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone, and seeing the creativity of all of our students!

My name is Kim Sibray, and I am excited to be joining the Gilpin County School community as a secondary math teacher! I have been a passionate math, science, and STEM teacher for more
than 13 years. I absolutely love finding opportunities to create hands-on and experiential learning that helps students build confidence and a deeper understanding of math concepts.
I began my teaching career in New Mexico as a math and science teacher after earning both an
Undergraduate and Master’s Degree in Education from the University of New Mexico. I achieved
my National Board Certification in Adolescence & Young Adulthood Mathematics in 2012, and
have taught everything from foundational math to AP calculus. For the past four years, I have
been a teacher at Chinook West High School in Nederland, where I was a proud recipient of the
2026 BVSD Impact Educator Award.
Coming to GCSD feels a bit like coming home, as my two oldest children started in kindergarten
with Ms. Katie ten years ago. We were part of the Gilpin family for two years before switching to
homeschool so I could take care of my daughter’s medical needs. Now, I have three kids who are
15, 12, and 5. I love to garden, cook, and read when I’m at my home in Rollinsville, and also love
to get out for camping, biking, and hiking adventures with my husband and kids.

My name is Carly Wagner and I am excited to be joining GCSS as a middle school English Language Arts teacher. I have been substitute teaching at GCSD this year and I have loved getting to know the students, and I appreciates the close-knit community.
I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies and entered education soon after, substituting across all grade levels, including long-term roles in English classrooms. My goal is to make ELA engaging and relevant to students’ lives, while helping them build confidence, think critically, and communicate their ideas.
Outside of school, I enjoy hiking with my dog, making stained glass, and exploring Colorado. I am looking forward to the year ahead and building relationships with students and families.

Kelly Andrews with Resilience 1220 has been a big supporter of our students over the last few years. She came during the last week of school to work with our Peer Leadership students to provide a summer wellness kit creation station that students could utilize to make wellness kits to take home with them over the summer.

Thank you to the Idaho Springs Starbucks for providing coffee for teachers this week during our staff professional development. We are so grateful they consistently donate coffee to our school for special events and for teachers/staff.
