Hello Gilpin Families!
I can't believe we are already entering the second month of school! We had a great, and quite busy, start to the school year! In August, students were able to meet their mentors/mentees and complete their first Gilpin's Wild Kingdom expedition. We also had all Kindergarten through fifth grade students complete beginning of year NWEA Maps testing for mathematics and reading to give teachers an instructional baseline to begin the year. Students have acclimated well to their classrooms and everyone is in a nice groove!
For September we have our first late starts of the year, so school will not be starting until 9:00 on Wednesday, September 2nd and Wednesday, September 16th. We also have no school on Labor Day, September 7th!
I also wanted to thank all parents and families for improving school wide attendance last year. The district's student attendance has improved so much that we were recognized by the Colorado Department of Education as a Colorado Attendance Challenge Champion! GCSD was able to reduce chronic absenteeism by 71.2% over the past four school years! This beats the goal of a 50% reduction by 2028 created by CDE. This is a huge achievement and a huge shout out to our community for getting our children to school each day!
We are excited for our first full month of the school year and thankful for a great start!

- Although it has been hot, the weather can change at any time! Please remember to provide your child with a light coat or sweater, as well as a winter coat, boots, snow pants, hat, and gloves for our snowy days! If the weather is above 10 degrees with wind chill, we go outside!
- Please remember to provide your child with a snack each school day! We have snacks in my office available to any student, but we want to keep them in stock for those in need. The 8:00-4:00 school day is long and these students get hungry!
- If you haven't yet completed the annual Student & Parent Acknowledgements and Agreements form in Powerschool, please do! You can access that form by clicking "Forms" under "More" and then click the drop down menu to "General Forms"

Ms. Parten was nominated by her former student Isla VanHoose, who said of her, "I would like to nominate Ms. Nicole Parten for Teacher of the Month. Ms. Parten was my 2nd grade teacher and she was one of the best teachers I ever had. She is kind and caring to everyone. When someone finishes early she gives them extra challenging work. On the other hand, if someone needs extra help, she will give extra time and will help you out! She always wanted to hear about our interests and let us help decide what we would do in class. Her classroom was fun and I learned a lot from her. That is why I think Ms. Nicole should be teacher of the month." |

For our first Gilpin's Wild Kingdom "GWK" Expedition, students traveled to the rainforest with "The August Canopy Climb", focusing on the character traits patience, cooperation, and growth, as well as the school-wide expectations classroom routines and procedures. Students worked in mixed age-level teams to create different rainforest animals that included messages explaining how to be prepared for school and master school routines.
The following animals were created:
The "Steady Sloth": Practicing patience, moving slowly/calmly in the hallways, and pacing oneself in the morning.
The "Monkeys in Motion": Efficient actions (e.g., putting folders away, hanging up coats, turning in homework).
The "Camouflage Tree Frogs": Making sure personal items are "put away and out of sight" rather than left messy on floors or desks.
The "Boa Constrictor" Line-Up Link: Standing and waiting patiently in a single-file line during morning arrival or when waiting to enter the classroom.
All the animals were then added to the August Canopy Climb scene, which is by the elementary music room for all to see!

For September, we are traveling to the Australian Outback! The focus of the month is on recess transitions and lineups, with the character focus of responsibility and responsiveness. Classroom teachers will choose a classroom representative at the end of the month who best represented these traits and met these expectations. At the end of the month, students will work with their GWK teams to create Australian Outback animals representing the school-wide expectations of the month and complete an Australian Outback scene for all students to see! |
GCES is hosting it's third annual color run "The Safari Sprint" on Thursday, September 10th at 4:30 P.M. The color run is available to all students and families and will be a celebration for a fundraiser to support the 100 Elk Outdoor Education field trip for all 4th and 5th grade students. To raise funds for the field trip, all 4th and 5th grade students have an individual page on the GCES color run website. You can find that website here. The goal is for each student to raise 250 dollars to cover all expenses for the field trip. Students and families can share this link to all friends and family members! GCES also has "Safari Sprint" t-shirts available for purchase for 20 dollars a t-shirt! If you are a 4th or 5th grade student and you met your goal of raising 250 dollars, your t-shirt is free! If you would like to purchase a t-shirt, complete this Google Form. You can bring cash or check to the school or pay via Venmo @Patrick-Linnehan-1, last four digits 3917. |
GCSD is partnering with the Colorado Rockies to provide discount tickets with proceeds also supporting the 100 Elk Outdoor Education 4th and 5th grade field trip! The baseball game is Sunday, September 20th at 1:10 P.M. with the Colorado Rockies hosting the Seattle Mariners. Upper level tickets are on sale for 7 dollars and lower level tickets are on sale for 20 dollars. All tickets will be selected in a group so GCSD families can watch the game together! To purchase tickets print and complete the form provided here and bring, along with payment, to either Codi Ramsey or Patrick Linnehan no later than Thursday, September 10th. |
