Hello Gilpin Families!
I can't believe it but we are quickly approaching the end of our first academic quarter! This month we have Parent Teacher Conferences and I will be sending out report cards digitally at the end of the month. We have exciting events up ahead this month including the "Discovery Expedition: Math in the Wild" math fact challenge, the annual Halloween candy contest, Spooky Stroll, and the annual Halloween costume parades! We will also have our October's Woodland Wonders Gilpin's Wild Kingdom Expedition! We have had a very successful first quarter of the school year and I look forward to the month ahead!
Sincerely,
Patrick Linnehan

- Parent Teacher Conferences are this month! Make sure to sign up with your child's classroom teacher for a conference on either Thursday, October 22nd or Friday, October 23rd
- Although it has been hot, the weather can change at any time! Please remember to provide your child with a light coat or sweater, as well as a winter coat, boots, snow pants, hat, and gloves for our snowy days! If the weather is above 10 degrees with wind chill, we go outside!
- Please remember to provide your child with a snack each school day! We have snacks in my office available to any student, but we want to keep them in stock for those in need. The 8:00-4:00 school day is long and these students get hungry!
- If you haven't yet completed the annual Student & Parent Acknowledgements and Agreements form in Powerschool, please do! You can access that form by clicking "Forms" under "More" and then click the drop down menu to "General Forms"

For our second Gilpin's Wild Kingdom "GWK" Expedition, students traveled to the Australian Outback with "The September Outback Ascent", focusing on the character traits responsibility and responsiveness, as well as the school-wide expectations recess procedures, line-ups, and transitions. Students worked in mixed age-level teams to create different Australian Outback animals that included messages explaining how to lineup and transition effectively from the playground!
The following animals were created:
The "Boomerang Joey": Freezing instantly at the whistle and "returning" to line immediately, just like a boomerang.
The "Cozy Koala": Taking deep breaths and calming your body down as you transition from running around to standing in line.
The "Saltie Crocodile": Waiting patiently in line without snapping at classmates or rushing forward.
The "Bulldog Ant": The collective organization of the class as a group—marching together in unison toward a shared goal.
All the animals were then added to the September Outback Ascent scene, which is in the east end of the elementary hallway for all to see!

For October, we are going home to the Rocky Mountains! The focus of the month is on bathroom etiquette, with the character focus of wisdom and making good choices when no one is looking. Classroom teachers will choose a classroom representative at the end of the month who best represented these traits and met these expectations. At the end of the month, students will work with their GWK teams to create Rocky Mountain animals representing the school-wide expectations of the month and complete a Rocky Mountain scene for all students to see!

Mr. Ragland graciously gave each of the students a published copy of the book and he donated a copy to the elementary library. Mr. Ragland also had an interview on the television show "Colorado and Company" explaining the creative process making this book. Our very own Aubree Hartman and Sadie Elpers joined Mr. Ragland in the interview. You can see the interview by clicking here! You can also purchase his book by clicking here!
