Hello Gilpin Families!
Thank you to all students, parents, and staff members for a wonderful and successful October! I especially want to thank the parents who contributed to the Parent Teacher Conferences potluck! The food was amazing and the staff felt very appreciated!
The next two months are sure to fly by and the first semester will be over before we know it! As we move into November, punctual attendance becomes paramount. Please make sure your child attends school each day and arrives to school at or before 8:00 A.M. We have had a tough stretch with illnesses including the flu and strep throat. If your child is sick, please keep them home, but if they are healthy we need them here at school!
I want to thank parents regarding attendance as we have over 91% of students on track to stay below 16 absences in the school year. This number determines if a student may be deemed chronically absent. At the end of the first quarter last school year, 85% of students were on track with attendance. Thank you to all parents for our 6% improvement this school year!
We have an exciting month ahead. I look forward to continuing this great school year!
Sincerely,
Patrick Linnehan

- We have school on Monday and Tuesday of the week of Thanksgiving!
- The weather is beginning to turn as we approach winter! Please make sure to provide a hat, coat, and gloves with your child every school day. If the weather is above 10 degrees including wind chill, we go outside!
- Please remember to provide your child with a snack each school day! We have snacks in my office available to any student, but we want to keep them in stock for those in need. The 8:00-4:00 school day is long and these students get hungry!
- If you haven't yet completed the annual Student & Parent Acknowledgements and Agreements form in Powerschool, please do! You can access that form by clicking "Forms" under "More" and then click the drop down menu to "General Forms"

For our third Gilpin's Wild Kingdom "GWK" Expedition, students traveled to their home in the Rocky Mountains for "October's Woodland Wonders", focusing on the character trait making wise choices, as well as the school-wide expectations of appropriate bathroom etiquette and responsibility. Students worked in mixed age-level teams to create different Rocky Mountain animals that included messages explaining how to be responsible and appropriate in the bathroom!
The following animals were created:
The "Wise Bighorn Sheep": Using Materials Economically. Using only needed soap and paper towels (being wise with resources).
The "Snowshoe Hare": Using Quiet Voices & Soft Steps. Keeping the restroom peaceful and quiet (Snowshoe hares move silently through the snow!).
The "Mountain Goat": Respecting Privacy & Boundaries. Keeping space between stalls/sinks (Mountain goats maintain safe distances!).
The "Grizzly Caretaker": Overall Tidiness. Respecting the bathroom as a shared space, thanking custodians.
All the animals were then added to the October's Woodland Wonders scene, which is in the east end of the elementary hallway for all to see!

For November, we are traveling to the Florida Everglades! The focus of the month is on hallway behavior, with the character focus of awareness and consideration. Classroom teachers will choose a classroom representative at the end of the month who best represented these traits and met these expectations. At the end of the month, students will work with their GWK teams to create Florida Everglades animals representing the school-wide expectations of the month and complete an Everaglaes scene for all students to see!

For their first month, the student council focused on creating systems and procedures to make the most of their time together. They agreed on a list of expectations including focusing on equality and kindness, respecting all members ideas, and voting on different initiatives. They also conducted their meetings with agendas to keep their meetings timely.
For their first initiative, the student council organized a Halloween movie for all elementary students to celebrate the school reaching it's first 1,000 skills in IXL. The students watched "It's a Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and received a Halloween trail mix created and distributed by student council members. This month, student council would like to focus on keeping the bathrooms clean and maintained. They are advocating for fixing a lock in the boy's bathroom and will work to clean any writing off of the boy's and girl's bathroom stalls.

On Tuesday, November 24th all Kindergarten through fifth grade students will compete in the "Expedition Discovery: Math in the Wild" Math Fact Challenge. This is our second annual math fact challenge, testing all students in their math fact skills! The students will complete six activities navigating habitats around the world and testing different aspects of their math fact fluency. You can learn more about the activities by clicking the website here!

On Thursday, October 29th GCES held two costume parades! First the preschool students participated in both a parade and "trick or treating" through the elementary classrooms. Later in the afternoon, all elementary students participated in a costume parade through the elementary hallways! See highlights below!
|
On Monday, October 19th, the 5th grade and Upper Montessori students visited the historic Lincoln Hills to tour the site and see a performance by the Central City Opera. The Central City Opera performed "Earth to Kenzie", a story involving a 5th grade student who was recently evicted from her home and staying at a shelter. The story emphasized the importance of relationships and finding peace during turbulent times. The students had a wonderful time and we appreciate the community partnerships!
