District History

Gilpin County School District has a rich history dating back to 1862, just a year after the county was established. Early public schools served Central City, Black Hawk, and Russell Gulch, and by the late 1800s, education was expanding quickly, with the first high school graduation taking place in 1888. Over time, community support led to the construction of new schools to meet growing enrollment and the formation of Gilpin County School District RE-1 in 1959.

The current school site, located on Highway 119 north of Black Hawk, opened in 1978 and was designed to bring all K–12 students under one roof. Continued growth prompted expansions in the early 1980s and again in 2000, when a new three-story middle/high school building was added.

Gilpin County School District serves preschool through 12th grade students in a modern campus. Students benefit from a comprehensive educational experience, including advanced courses in English and math, concurrent enrollment options, and electives in the arts and trades. Athletics like football, volleyball, basketball, and track have been staples for decades, and extracurricular offerings continue to evolve to meet student interests. Gilpin County School District remains committed to preparing students for success in college, careers, and life.
